24-year-old defender Luke Fleurs, who represented South Africa at the Under-23 level, was tragically shot dead in a car hijacking incident in Johannesburg. The incident occurred at a petrol station in the suburb of Florida, where gunmen approached Fleurs, pointed a firearm at him, and shot him once in the upper body. Kaizer Chiefs, Fleurs’ club, released a statement expressing their sadness and offering thoughts and prayers to his family and friends. The South African Minister of Sports, Arts, and Culture also expressed his condolences, lamenting the loss of another life to violent crime. Fleurs had previously played for Ubuntu Cape Town and SuperSport United before joining Kaizer Chiefs in October 2023. He had represented South Africa at youth levels and had been called up to the senior national squad. Numerous tributes were posted in his memory, including from his former club SuperSport United.
